Hey there, I already submitted this a while back, but I've continued to work on the painting and now have a better photo of it, so now I'm completely satisfied with the piece. A special thanks to everyone who enjoyed it before, I do appreciate it. But please come back, because it kicks ass now
Bookcover illustration for The Man Who Laughs by Victor Hugo. The story follows Gwynplaine, who was horrifically disfigured as a child when he's sold by the evil king of England to this group of gypsies that made a living by mutilating children into circus freaks. They carve out the corners of Gwynplaine's mouth leaving him with a horrid permanent grin.
16 x 20, oil on canvas, first thing i've actually painted on a canvas in years.

This is absolutley fantastic, Clay. I'm glad I waited to comment, since I had this feeling that you were going to take this further. My favorite parts are his eyes, and of course, the mouth. The values just look so smooth and have good emotion behind the hard work you probably put into this. Plus I love the combination you use of realism ( the texture of his face) and the appealing look of formalism ( the hair and eyes). I hope that made some sense, but in other words: this just takes the cake. I'm glad you're happy with it, because this really is great stuff you're creating. Keep it up, Clay!

Amazing painting... The expression and emotional depth is very well rendered... however, I'm not sure about the smile. I understand what you're trying to portray (aesthetically and emotionally) but the elongated corner of the mouth (the cut) seems to me to be superfluous and over-emphasized undermining the emotional expressiveness of the painting. Extraordinary work though... Bravooo...
